Got to taste them all
Muramoto Bee Farm

zumigaya, surrounded by mountains and lush greenery, is one of the few remaining beekeeping regions in Shizuoka. Here, traditional honey production thrives as beekeepers move their hives according to the seasons, following blooming flowers across meadows and fields. Each beekeeper has a designated area, and the honey’s flavor reflects the unique blossoms found within their territory.

Muramoto Bee Farm offers more than seven types of honey, each with distinct aromas, from the rich fragrance of renge blossoms to the refreshing notes of mandarin blossoms and the mild sweetness of Japanese holly. Among the local favorites, mandarin honey stands out, representing Shizuoka’s signature citrus fruit. On the other hand, the subtle flavor of holly (known as the “mochi” flower) honey makes it a versatile ingredient for cooking and desserts—it even takes the stage in café menus and baked treats at Takumishuku, the artisan center next door.

For adventurous palates, Muramoto also produces unique varieties like the floral mountain cherry (yamazakura) and the bold, spicy Japanese pepper tree (karasuzansho). This wide range of flavors is a true gift from the area’s rich natural environment.

Founded in 1926 (the first year of the Shōwa era), Muramoto Bee Farm has been producing honey for generations. Today, the third and fourth generations of the Muramoto family continue to preserve its signature flavors. According to the current owners, the secret to producing exceptional honey lies in raising healthy, thriving bees. They carefully monitor the number of bees and maintain the health of each hive with close attention and care.

The owners say that when the bees are well-tended, it feels as if they are giving permission—saying, “You can collect honey tomorrow.” By listening to their bees and relying on years of experience and intuition, they continue to craft delicious, high-quality honey season after season.

Though the shop may occasionally be unattended, there’s no need to worry—you can always find Muramoto Bee Farm’s honey at Takumishuku. They also hold occasional tasting events at the Takumishuku entrance, where you can sample different floral varieties and discover your favorite. Don’t miss the chance to explore the rich flavors of their natural, locally harvested honey!
